The Venerable Walter Fulgentius Jordan, an Augustinian Friar from Ballyhaunis who was murdered in 1649 in Holywell whilst saying mass. Stories about the murder lived on in the locality, and in 1960 were investigated by famous historian Professor FX Martin and Dr. George Maguire, Claremorris. They discovered an account of this tragedy in a book published in 1654 in Belgium.
Based on their work, a team in Claremorris Community Radio produced an exciting and vibrant account of the death of this almost forgotten martyr. This programme was first broadcast here on August 16th. Contributors include Professor Mícheál Ó Siochrú, TCD, Dr. Tadhg Ó hAnnracháin, UCD, Michael Kelly, Fr Kieran Waldron, Archivist of Tuam Archdiocese, Paul Waldron, Fr David Kelly, Archivist of the Augustinian Order, and the late Tom Waldron, Chairman of Claremorris Historical Society.
In the weeks since the broadcast, interest in the community regarding the documentary was so high that the station decided to create a book to accompanying it. This book, which was launched on Monday, October 19th, costs €10 and includes a free CD of the original radio documentary.
We are delighted to announce that the book is now available in our online store. To get your copy, please visit the following link: ccr946.ie/product/murder-of-fr-jordan/
