On Saturday June 6th at 3pm on Market Square Castlebar, United Against Racism Mayo Branch are holding a public vigil in solidarity with Black Americans who are facing violence and death every day at the hands of the police.
UAR Mayo supports the continued protests of American people of colour as they fight for safety and respect for their lives
They invite members of the public living within 5km to join us in standing along the street social distancing within the government guidelines of 2m between each family group.
They do this to show the United States that the world is watching and that the world is seeing exactly what is happening right now. UAR Mayo are protesting to demand justice for the victims and communities that suffer under the systems of oppression that support the state sanctioned police violence, murder and lynchings of Black people.
The protest is also a call to action to end all forms of institutional racism in Ireland such as that experienced by residents of Direct Provision, Asylum Seekers and the Travelling Community.
UAR Mayo ask members of the public to attend only if they can do so safely wearing a face mask, If they are free of symptoms of Covid-19. Live no more than 5km from Market Square Castlebar and are willing to strictly maintain social distancing of 2m between family groups.
For those not living in Castlebar check the UAR Mayo Facebook page for additional locations that may be happening around the county.
